iMessage Security: Analysis of Possible Attacks

The following presentation I gave for my Cryptography and Data Security course at WPI explores possible attacks on the iMessage protocol and challenges Apple’s claim that it cannot decrypt this data.

…conversations which take place over iMessage and FaceTime are protected by end-to-end encryption so no one but the sender and receiver can see or read them. Apple cannot decrypt that data.

Playing Rock-Paper-Scissors with Artificial Intelligence

Though rock-paper-scissors is usually a game of pure chance in which moves are selected at random, a player can predict the opponent’s next move based on previous rounds of play. For my Artificial Intelligence class, I created an online version of the game that played over 13,000 rounds against human competitors and used this data to calculate transition probabilities in a 10th-order Markov chain. The virtual player was able to win 3.05% more of the rounds that did not end in a draw than it would have won using the naïve method of randomly selecting moves.

Micro Aircraft Competition Design

The goal of this project was to design and construct a remote controlled aircraft as an entry in the Micro Class of the 2013 SAE Aero Design West Competition. To succeed at the competition, the plane had to be as light as possible, carry a high payload fraction, and be stowed in a box with interior dimensions of 24″x18″x8″. The final design is a flying wing that has a wingspan of 88 centimeters, weighs 0.4 pounds, and is capable of carrying a payload of over 600 grams. The aircraft was assembled using a jig, which allowed for rapid construction and minimized construction flaws. By combining detailed analysis of aerodynamics, structures, and materials with flight testing, the team developed a refined aircraft that placed WPI in the 4th position out of 29 universities, and in the 1st position amongst US teams at the SAE Aero Design West 2013 competition.
